I have always liked discovering grafitti in a new city, and Quito surprised me. There is a lot of grafitti art, and I am already familiar with a few artists via their trademark style. What I really enjoy is recognising the artists’ style, theme or characters in completely other parts of the city. It makes me feel like a detective finding clues about where this artist has been. Here I want to share some grafitti art in my neighbourhood, La Floresta.
Ocho y medio is a cinema in my neighbourhood that shows a lot of ‘alternative’ films, classics and a lot of Latin American cinema. It is also a nice cafe and bar. Just two weeks ago they remodelled the place and added this grafitti to their exterior design.
These characters, the cow and the wierd looking ghost bandit, burkha figure keep coming up again and again accross town.
There is a lot of fantastic outer world art going on here in Quito among grafitti artists. I can’t say I really understand what, if anything, they are trying to get accorss, but I do appreciate the effort and artistry that goes into it. It also seems like such a fleeting thing, I have seen some grafitti vanish already. That’s not always a bad thing of course, but in some cases I do sense an urge to preserve it in some way.
Saludos from Quito!
