Being a history enthusiast I can hardly walk by an old building or monument without considering it, wondering what went on there in the past and how it came to be in the hands of its current owner. In Quito, like in many places, magnificent old buildings are surrounded by horrendous new structures and often neglected to the point of no return. Seeing historical heritage go to waste like that really pains me.
Fortunately some buildings are being saved, at times due to intense lobbying by local historians and people who understand the value of world heritage. Here is one example from Quito, the National Institute of History was installed in this magnificent building, previously (mis)used as a warehouse and hardware store.
Likewise the historical centre in Quito is a place, as the name should suggest, where buildings are sometimes kept in shape, like this theatre which was given a new lick of paint when I walked by on Sunday. One of my favorites.
