One of the main tourist attractions in Quito is the Teleferico, a sort of ski lift that takes you up to 4100m altitude on a 12 minute ride (remember Quito is already at almost 3000m). We timed the ride because of a bet, I lost.

Being a history enthusiast I can hardly walk by an old building or monument without considering it, wondering what went on there in the past and how it came to be in the hands of its current owner. In Quito, like in many places, magnificent old buildings are surrounded by horrendous new structures and often neglected to the point of no return. Seeing historical heritage go to waste like that really pains me.

Although women in the families we work with seem to have an equal standing as men, this is not the norm among the indigenous community in general. Women are often still very much subordinate to men, and I got a glimpse of that on the day of the confirmation. Women and young girls mainly take care of smaller children and toddlers, while men sit around and talk or play on their phones. Later on when we walked to the celebration after mass women were the ones carrying the heavy beer crates.
